Running a profitable business can be like a roller coaster. You tell yourself it’s normal for business owners and entrepreneurs to experience this. That’s just the way it is for everyone. You have your highs. You have your lows. And you wonder if you’ll have to live this way forever.
I remember when I started my first business. Imagine... my own law firm at the age of 25! I was excited about the prospect of building an organization. I had my goals. I had a dream of what my firm would be like. Sometimes your dream doesn’t materialize the way you had hoped. The excitement turns into stress and struggle.
You see, I discovered along the way that being a business owner or entrepreneur can be a lonely life. You’re expected to have all the answers. When things get crazy, who has to put out the fires? Let me take a minute here to tell you the single most important concept I have learned. And this doesn’t just apply to business owners and entrepreneurs...
Most truly successful people have coaches. Period.
This includes people whose success is based on their raw, god-given talent. You probably don’t give it a second thought.
If Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer alive... why does he have 4 coaches?
Why would a talented Metropolitan Opera star like Carol Vaness have a vocal coach?
If Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL… why does he need to be coached?
Why is that?
One reason is a coach will focus on solutions when you are focused on a problem. When people face challenges, they have a tendency to focus on the problem... not on the solution.
COACHES FOCUS ON SOLUTIONS
A client of mine who is in the real estate business was facing a shifting market and didn’t know how to adjust to the new market conditions. For a few weeks, she consistently focused on the “problem.” The more she focused on the problem, the bigger the problem seemed.
Then I said to her, “what is the current market willing to give you…what’s the opportunity here…let’s focus on solutions.” With that shift in mindset it was only about 30 days until she started seeing very positive results. And now, about 90 days later her income is exceeding what her income was at the same time last year. We simply and clearly focused on solutions.
New research into brain functioning is validating the power of this approach. Scientists have discovered that every person’s brain processes information in a unique way, so the connections that one person makes to solve a problem will be completely different than those made by another. When the mind is focused on reaching a desired outcome, the brain connects data in a brand new way, which creates those “AHA!” moments. You’re probably wondering if you have any “AHA” moments ahead.
Most financial experts say the economy is in a free fall. The housing market is the worst in history. The price of oil has reached record highs. When you see your savings slipping away, you will begin to realize that seeking professional help is a priceless solution.
